We have specialised in repairing Logic7 amplifiers from Mercedes Benz for over 10 years.
The first version of this article was created on 18 March 2018 and since then we have continuously shown what effective refurbishment is different from “pseudo-repairs”.

We show why we proactively replace components on the main board, why we apply a protective coating after repair, and how we restore the unit to full working order step by step. The photos in this article still show the Komtel Serwis logo – that was our name before the rebrand to OEMatic.

These procedures have remained unchanged for years, just like our effectiveness.

We accept all Logic7 versions for repair — including units after failed or amateur repair attempts. We repair every fault, including electrically burnt or software-damaged OASIS modules. We take on Logic7 repairs that others do not want to carry out, because we know that very often we are already the last resort.

Our success rate is 99%. And what about the remaining 1%? These are extreme cases, such as an amplifier physically broken in half or removed from a car that stood in water for a month. Even in such difficult situations, we can help by offering a main board replacement. In practice, we are prepared for every case.

Over 10 years ago, the first refurbished amplifier was returned to the owner of a Mercedes W221.
Today we still give these units a second life — effectively and with a full 24-month warranty (on the entire amplifier).

A fault in the Logic7 amplifier (Harman / Kardon) in Mercedes Benz (W221 / W216), shown by no sound, crackling or a flat battery, is almost always caused by damage to components on the main board. Most often such damage is the result of corrosion, i.e. a combination of moisture and a design flaw in the cooling system, and sometimes voltage surges in the vehicle’s electrical system (after using a so-called booster).

Broken Logic7 amplifier in your Mercedes? We’ll repair it.

You get into your S-Class or CL, start the Comand system and… silence.
Instead of the deep bass of Logic7 you hear crackling, isolated pops from the speakers, or simply nothing. Silence.
Another day, in the morning, you can’t start the car – the battery is flat again. Sounds familiar?

No sound, a “device unavailable” message, or a flat battery are the most common symptoms of this fault.

In this article we explain why the Logic7 amplifier fails and what effective refurbishment looks like — in other words, professional repair that restores the unit to full working order. The repair itself takes 1–5 working days, you receive 24 months’ warranty on the entire unit, and the total cost is 2460 zł incl. VAT.

Before you buy a used amplifier with an uncertain history, which is very likely to fail again due to moisture, or hear the price of a new unit at an authorised Mercedes dealer — it is worth pausing for a moment.
In practice, refurbishment is the most sensible and safest solution.

How do you identify a Logic7 amplifier in a Mercedes?

The Logic7 amplifier can be identified by the markings Becker BE7021, BE9021, BE9061, BEM005 and by the harman/kardon logo on the casing.

Location in the vehicle – where is the amplifier fitted?

The first step is to locate the amplifier. In S-Class (W221) and CL-Class (W216) models, this unit is factory-fitted in a rather unfortunate place, which means it is often exposed to damp.

Amplifier location: it is in the boot, on the left-hand side — above the wheel arch. To get to it, you need to remove the trim, i.e. the boot side panel. This area can become damp, which is exactly why Logic7 problems usually start here.

Consequences: This location exposes the unit to direct contact with moisture. You can find out more about this in the “Causes” section.

Once you have the unit in view, it is worth checking the label. You will find confirmation that the manufacturer is Becker (Harman/Kardon). Then, to make sure your amplifier qualifies for this service, check whether it has any of the following markings (BE7021, BE9021, BE9061, BEM005).

Car models and Comand NTG systems

This amplifier is the heart of the audio system in Mercedes’ top models.

  • Models: S-Class (W221) and CL-Class (W216). These are luxury cars, but it is worth noting that they also have their typical issues. More on common problems in the Mercedes S-Class W221 can be found in this comprehensive guide (article in English).
  • Systems: Logic7 works with Comand NTG3 and NTG3.5. Control is via MOST fibre optic, i.e. the fibre-optic bus used for communication between modules. If you want to better understand the technical aspects of how this bus works, it is worth looking at the official MOST Cooperation documentation (PDF document in English).
  • Vehicle generation: The Logic7 amplifier was fitted in both pre-facelift and facelift versions of the W221 (S Class) / W216 (CL Class).

Typical symptoms of a Logic7 fault (Harman/Kardon)

Logic7 amplifier faults have fairly distinctive symptoms. The most common are complete silence from the speakers, loud crackling, battery drain, or errors in the Comand system (“device unavailable”).

Below you will find an overview of the problems our customers most often report. For clarity, we have grouped them by topic.

1. “Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t” – sound problems

This is the most common group of symptoms. In practice, the problem very often depends on temperature or humidity.

  • Crackling and popping: “The crackling appeared briefly in the speakers, and after a few minutes it stopped playing.” Another customer describes it like this: “It pops in the speakers, and when it’s cold it’s even worse. It’s the sort of sound you get when a speaker wire is shorted from + to -.”
  • Temperature dependence: “When it’s cold it switches on for a few minutes and then goes silent.”
  • Sound quality issue: “The sound is screechy, unclear whether it’s radio or CD.”
  • Uncontrolled volume: “While listening to music, the sound goes up to maximum volume and does not respond to lowering it.”
  • Intermittent dropouts: “Sometimes the voice cuts out, it hasn’t been flooded, everything else works.”

2. “Device unavailable” – complete silence from the speakers

As the corrosion progresses, the amplifier stops responding. In practice, this paralyses the entire MOST fibre-optic loop.

  • Complete silence: “One day I started the car and there was simply no sound.”
  • No radio stations: “There is no sound in the car and the list of radio stations disappeared from the display.”
  • Comand system errors: “device unavailable”, “disc cannot be read”, “the display shows information that the device is unavailable for all audio devices.”
  • No communication: “During diagnostics there is no connection or identification with the N93/1 tuner/amplifier.”

3. “Flat battery” – power supply problems

This is a rather deceptive symptom, because even with the ignition off the amplifier does not “go fully to sleep”, in other words it continues to draw current.

  • Current draw: “I have an S-Class W221 S500. I have a problem with current draw from the amplifier (it draws current, drains the battery).”
  • Fan runs continuously: “After the ignition is switched off, the amplifier fan keeps running all the time; when the car is parked for a longer time it drains the battery.”
  • Overheating: “Even when the car is switched off and everything is turned off, the amplifier gets hot.”
  • No fan response: Sometimes the opposite happens too: “The fan does not run on the amplifier itself either.”

If you recognise any of these scenarios, it is worth treating it as an almost certain sign of main board damage.

Most common causes of amplifier failure

A fault in the Logic7 (Harman/Kardon) amplifier in Mercedes Benz (W221 / W216), showing no sound, crackling or battery drain, is almost always caused by damage to components on the main board. Most often this is the result of corrosion caused by a combination of moisture and a design flaw in the cooling system. Less often, the cause can also be voltage spikes in the vehicle’s electrical system, for example after using a so-called “booster”.

Moisture and corrosion of the main board are in practice the result of design errors, namely the unfortunate placement of the amplifier in the boot,
and the lack of protection, that is an additional protective coating on the main board.

1. Moisture in the boot → moisture in the amplifier

The amplifier is mounted in the boot, above the left wheel arch — a location particularly exposed to water and condensation. After a minor collision, a visit to the car wash or rain, water vapour gets inside and settles on the circuit board. After a few weeks, a conductive deposit appears and starts corroding the tracks.

2. Dust and an inefficient cooling system

The situation is made worse by the poorly thought-out cooling system. The fan, positioned close to the electronics, does cool it, but at the same time it draws in dust, which over time settles on the main board. Dust alone would not yet be a major problem if it were not for the fact that it very easily absorbs moisture.

This is what the inside of Logic7 looks like after years of collecting dust — ideal conditions for corrosion to form.

3. Corrosion and damaged components

In practice, this means the amplifier corrodes slowly, because liquid gets beneath the lacquer layer protecting the electronic tracks, i.e. the solder mask, and simply eats away at them. It also corrodes all the components soldered to them. It is worth seeing what happens on the board:

Heavily corroded main board of a Mercedes Logic7 amplifier with visible green deposits and damaged tracks
This is what the Logic7 main board looks like after contact with moisture — the green deposit is corrosion that eats away at the tracks.

Why is this important? Corrosion progresses even in a disconnected unit, so the longer you wait, the more tracks will need to be rebuilt later.

Faults in the Comand NTG3 system often have the same root cause — moisture, corrosion or interruptions in MOST communication. If you want to learn about other typical symptoms of the older Comand system, it is also worth reading this post:
15 problems that may occur in your Comand APS NTG2 navigation system →

4. No protective coating

The factory Logic7 has no protective coating at all — no layer to protect the electronics — so the components on the main board are left exposed. That is exactly why OEMatic refurbishment can deliver a better result than a new amplifier from the same series. What is more, the coating made with Plastik 70 acts preventively and creates “a barrier against moisture and corrosive agents” that the original unit simply lacks.

5. Surges after using a so-called “booster”

Another group of faults is purely electrical. The most common scenario reported by our customers is a fault that appears immediately after an emergency jump-start using a “booster” or starter charger. Such a sudden, high voltage pulse can irreversibly damage key components on the main board, including the OASIS module. If you do not know exactly what a jump starter booster is and how it works, it is worth reading this guide to avoid similar problems in future.

In practice, that is why we do not recommend a jump-start with the amplifier connected.

How is a factory car amplifier repaired?

You can find a detailed description of shipping and how the repair is organised on the “Send for repair” page.
Below we show how the Logic7 amplifier refurbishment is carried out in our workshop step by step.

Logic7 amplifier refurbishment usually takes from 1 to 5 days. Fault confirmation is free of charge. You pay only for an effective repair based on full refurbishment, not on a temporary “patch”. In practice, this includes cleaning, rebuilding tracks, replacing components, testing in a MOST environment, i.e. the audio communication system, and final anti-corrosion protection.

1. Contact and shipping

Fill in the online form or call us – within a few minutes you will know the estimated cost and diagnosis time.
Just pack the unit itself, without cables or bracket, and send it to us. After 1–2 days the amplifier arrives at our workshop.

2. Diagnosis and fault confirmation

The amplifier goes to the test bench, where we check communication, power supply and all audio channels.
After diagnosis, you receive a refurbishment offer with the price, lead time and scope of work.
We never repair anything without your consent.

3. Proper refurbishment and testing

The refurbishment procedure at OEMatic has remained the same for at least 10 years: we clean the board of dust and deposits, rebuild the tracks, replace damaged components and finally apply a protective lacquer coating. We do not “patch” the problem. We restore full factory functionality. Finally, the amplifier is tested in an environment simulating Mercedes audio system operation and only then is it ready to be sent back. It is worth seeing what this looks like in practice:

The main board of a Mercedes Logic7 amplifier during repair, after components have been removed and while the tracks are being prepared for refurbishment.
The key repair stage: we remove the damaged components and prepare the board for proper refurbishment.

The first step is thorough cleaning of the board to remove dirt and corrosion hotspots. We then remove the damaged components, which gives us access to the broken connections.
Only then do we move on to the most precise stage, namely rebuilding the corroded tracks.
As you can see below, every broken connection is then carefully restored.

Mercedes Logic7 amplifier main board during refurbishment, with rebuilt connections and repaired tracks visible
After removing the corrosion, every damaged track and every connection is precisely restored.

Once all damaged connections have been rebuilt, the board is ready for reassembly of the components. At this stage, we precisely solder all electronic parts back into place. At the same time, we proactively replace the components that, from experience, are prone to failure.

This is the final stage: we fit and solder all electronic components onto the refurbished board.

After all components have been fitted, the final but very important step is coating the main board with a special protective compound. It creates a protective layer — a barrier that protects the electronics from moisture in the future. Only then does the prepared and tested amplifier return to the customer — together with our 24-month warranty.

After repair and reassembly, the entire board is lacquered to provide preventive protection against moisture returning.

Yes, all four photos above show the same main board of the Logic7 amplifier. They document the successive stages of our detailed refurbishment — from diagnosing corrosion, through track rebuilding and component fitting, to final lacquer protection. In practice, this clearly shows how carefully we approach every repair.

4. Return and warranty

After successful testing and payment, we send the amplifier back with a written 24-month warranty.
You refit it and can once again enjoy the full Logic7 sound in your Mercedes.

What does a “warranty for the whole amplifier” mean? Put simply, it covers every component of the unit for 24 months, not just the repaired fault. If any other part fails during that period, we will repair it under the warranty. In other words, it is full protection, not a limited “warranty for the service performed”.

Important: the warranty does not cover flooding or moisture ingress again.
In practice, water in the boot is very often the cause of the fault.
Before refitting the repaired amplifier, it is worth locating and fixing any leaks (for example around the lights, boot lid or wheel arches).

Repair or replace? What will be better for you?

Now that you know the symptoms of a faulty amplifier and why the Logic7 fails, it is worth seeing why refurbishment can be a better solution than replacement.

The conclusion is simple:

refurbishment remains the most cost-effective and sensible option. Buying a used amplifier is, in practice, throwing money away. It is only a matter of time before moisture and dust cause the same fault in it. A new or refurbished part from the authorised dealer is many times more expensive.

In summary: if your Logic7 has stopped working, it is worth considering repair instead of looking for a used unit and paying for a new one.

Repair of Mercedes Logic7 amplifier – FAQ

Below we have collected the questions that most often come up before Logic7 amplifier repair or during it.
The answers are based on experience from hundreds of completed refurbishments.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions

What is the most common cause of Logic7 amplifier failure in a Mercedes?

There are two main causes. Most often it is corrosion of the main board (caused by moisture and dust due to its location in the boot). Sometimes the damage is also the result of a surge in the electrical system, e.g. after using a “booster” to start the car in an emergency.

Where exactly is the Logic7 amplifier fitted in the Mercedes W221?

The amplifier is located in the boot, on the left-hand side (driver’s side). It is hidden behind the trim, mounted on a special frame above the wheel arch.

Do you repair amplifiers after flooding or failed repair attempts?

Yes. We specialise in repairing audio amplifiers and have over 10 years’ experience. We accept units for repair that have been “messed with” by other workshops, as well as those that have suffered heavy water ingress or have a damaged OASIS processor.

What does the 24-month warranty cover?

Our warranty is comprehensive and covers the entire unit, not just the replaced parts or the reported fault. If within 2 years anything at all (even another component that was working today) fails, we repair it as a priority under warranty.

Does the amplifier need to be coded again in the car after repair?

No. The Logic7 amplifier does not require recoding or adaptation after repair. Once fitted, it works straight away in the MOST system, just as it did originally.

Are there any Logic7 amplifier versions that cannot be repaired?

In practice, we repair all Logic7 versions – including those that have previously had unsuccessful repair attempts. The only exception is units that are completely mechanically destroyed (for example after a fire or a physically broken main board). In such cases, we also have a solution – replacing the main board with another unit.

Does the vehicle’s origin (USA, Japan, Europe) matter when repairing a Logic7 amplifier?

No. The region the car comes from does not matter – we can repair all Logic7 versions for W221/W216. You may need instructions for your car?
