Problem: No sound in the MIB unit (Discover Pro, Columbus, MMI Navigation plus) in VAG cars. The problem mainly affects MIB 1 from 2013-2016, and less often MIB 2, in models such as VW Golf 7, Passat B8, Audi A3 8V, Skoda Octavia 3, Seat Leon 3.

Symptoms: Crackling that precedes a complete loss of sound. The sound returns after tapping the unit or after resetting the system. The problem appears and disappears at random.

Cause: Cold solder joints in the audio path. Solder connections between the amplifier and the main board develop micro-cracks under thermal cycles, i.e. repeated heating and cooling (60-70°C in the glovebox), and vibration. The typical age of the navigation unit with this fault is 7-11 years.

Solution: Refurbishment of the audio path – 1230 zł, 1-3 days, warranty 24 months. It is worth noting that the unit is located in the passenger glovebox, not in the dashboard.

No sound in MIB, Discover Pro or Columbus? Crackling in the speakers that eventually turned into complete silence? This issue affects Audi, VW, Skoda, Seat and Porsche owners with MIB 1 and MIB 2 systems.

It is best not to start with replacing the speakers, buying a new wiring loom or updating the software. Good practice is to check the MIB unit in the glovebox first, because in 99% of cases that is where the source of the problem is. In practice, an effective solution is to refurbish the audio path in this controller (MIB MAIN-UNIT).

Is this article about your equipment?

What is MIB / Discover Pro / Columbus?

MIB (Modular Infotainment Platform) is a radio-navigation unit from Harman Becker. In other words, it is the car's central multimedia unit. The VAG Group sells the same device under different names: VW (Discover Pro, Discover Media Pro), Audi (MMI Navigation plus), Skoda (Columbus), Seat (Discover Pro).

There are two versions: MIB 1 (2013-2016) and MIB 2 (from 2016). In 90% of enquiries we receive MIB 1. It is this version that most often has problems with cold solder joints.

Location: Passenger glovebox, not the centre console. The display in the middle of the dashboard is only a monitor connected by an LVDS cable, i.e. a cable responsible for transmitting the picture. The main unit is in the glovebox. That is where the CD, two SD slots (SD1, SD2) are, and that is where the fault occurs.

Front panel of the MIB unit — CD slot at the top, SD1 and SD2 slots at the bottom. If you can see these elements in the passenger glovebox, you most likely have MIB.

How do you identify your unit?

Rear of the MIB Harman Becker unit with visible audio connectors (coloured plugs), CD drive, SD1/SD2 slots, main Quadlock connector and identification label with part number
MIB main unit removed from the passenger glovebox. You can see the coloured audio plugs, CD drive, SD1/SD2 slots, quadlock connector — the main wiring connector — and the label with the part number.

Open the passenger glovebox. If you can see a CD slot and 2 SD slots, you have MIB, that is this type of multimedia unit. It is worth removing the reader, because on the label you will find a part number starting with:

VW Discover Pro (MIB 1):
5G0 035 0XX — e.g. 5G0 035 043, 5G0 035 043A, 5G0 035 043B, 5G0 035 020, 5G0 035 021 and other variants.

Audi MMI (MIB 1):
8V0 035 0XX — e.g. 8V0 035 043, 8V0 035 043B, 8V0 035 020, 8V0 035 035 and other variants.

Skoda Columbus (MIB 1):
3V0 035 0XX or 5E0 035 0XX — e.g. 3V0 035 043, 5E0 035 043 and other variants.

The letter at the end, for example A, B, C or D, denotes the revision version. In practice, we repair all these variants.

Not sure? You can send a photo of the label via the contact form, and we will identify the unit.

Which cars does this problem affect?

Models with MIB 1 (2013-2016) — this is where the problem occurs most often: Golf 7, Passat B8, Audi A3 8V, Octavia 3, Leon 3, Tiguan (2016), Touran 3

The fault can also appear in newer models with MIB 2, including Arteon, Kodiaq, Karoq, A4 B9 and Q5 FY, but it happens distinctly less often.

Condition: factory system with two SD slots in the passenger glovebox.

What symptoms does the MIB/Discover Pro fault cause?

A fault in the MIB audio path can show itself in several ways. It is worth going through these symptoms step by step, because that helps confirm that the source of the problem is the unit in the glovebox, not the speakers or the wiring.

1. Complete lack of sound (the most common symptom)

This is the most common scenario. The system appears to work normally — the display responds, the menus change, the navigation shows the route — but nothing can be heard from the speakers. This affects all sources: FM/AM radio, CD, SD cards, Bluetooth and navigation prompts.

Customer reports:

  • “No sound from any source”
  • “Simply no sound, speakers are fine”
  • “There is no sound/voice on the radio, otherwise everything works”
  • “Complete lack of voice, the radio has not been tampered with”

Why do all sources fall silent at the same time? Because the signal from each of them — the FM tuner, the CD player or the navigation voice — passes through the same audio path, that is, the shared sound-processing route, which ends at the amplifier. If cold solder joints, in other words microcracks in the soldered connections, have broken the link between the audio processor and the power stages, commonly known as the power amp, it makes no difference whether you are listening to the radio or a CD. The signal simply does not reach the speakers.

The problem can appear suddenly — you start the car in the morning and there is silence — or develop gradually. In practice, it goes like this: today it plays for 10 minutes, tomorrow for 5 minutes, and the day after that not at all.

2. Cracking noises before the sound cuts out

The fault rarely appears completely without warning. It usually starts with occasional crackling in the speakers, which over time becomes more frequent and more noticeable.

Customer reports:

  • “It started with crackling”
  • “At first there was crackling in the rear right speaker, after some time I noticed it was no longer working”
  • “Problem - crackling in the rear speakers”
  • “While connecting with VCDS, very unpleasant crackling came from the speakers”
  • “On some tracks/frequencies there is noise/crackling”

Crackling is usually a sign that the soldered joints are starting to lose conductivity. Microcracks in the solder — that is, very small damage to the joint material — make the current flow irregularly. That is where the crackling and dropouts come from. Over time the cracks deepen, and the sound can disappear completely.

A typical progression of the problem looks like this:

  1. Occasional crackling, for example once a week.
  2. Frequent crackling and music dropouts, even every day.
  3. The sound works for a few minutes, then there is silence.
  4. Complete lack of sound.

3. The problem cuts in and out

The sound works randomly. Sometimes it is there, sometimes it is not. Sometimes it comes back by itself, and sometimes only after a system restart (long press of the power button) or after a “fake” update from the SD card.

Customer reports:

  • “Sometimes it appears, but more often there’s silence”
  • “The sound problem comes and goes. All the other functions work properly”
  • “When the car is started, sometimes it comes on with sound and sometimes without. Sometimes while driving the sound suddenly comes on or goes off”
  • “The sound usually comes back after a ‘fake’ software update from the SD card, it returns after interrupting the procedure and resetting the unit, and sometimes the sound comes back on its own”
  • “Every so often they start playing, but after a while they stop again”

This is a classic symptom of cold solder joints, that is, soldered connections that intermittently lose contact and are already on the verge of complete failure. The connection is broken, but under vibration — for example after a tap or driving over a pothole — or a change in temperature (restart, cooling down), contact can briefly return.

Temporary “fixes” most often used by customers:

  • “It’s enough for me to tap the module in the glovebox and it starts playing”
  • “If I tap the MIB unit then it plays, and after a while there’s crackling and nothing plays”
  • A “fake” SD update, meaning a restart of the electronics and software
  • Closing and opening the car, meaning a full system restart

It’s worth noting that none of these actions removes the source of the problem. The connections on the board remain damaged.

4. Partial loss of sound – one speaker or one side

The problem usually starts with one channel. First the rear right stops working, then the front right, and over time the whole right side. Sometimes it is the other way round and affects the left side.

Customer reports:

  • “The rear right isn’t playing. Every so often it starts working, but after a while it stops again”
  • “The radio works properly on the driver’s side. The passenger side stopped working — first the front speaker crackled and went silent. Then the rear speaker crackled and went silent”
  • “First the right side stopped playing, before that it crackled, cut out and popped. Now the left side cuts out and switches off”
  • “The rear right speaker isn’t playing, it hums slightly, sometimes crackles”

The amplifier in the MIB has 4 channels (front left/right, rear left/right) or 8 channels (in premium systems). Each channel has separate soldered connections, i.e. its own contact points. If one channel develops cold solder joints — meaning weakened or cracking connections — the others very often start to fail as well.

5. Temperature-related problem

The sound works normally when the cold car is started, but if the car has been standing in the sun and has heated up a lot, the sound can become hoarse, crackly or distorted after starting. After 15-20 minutes of driving, once the unit has cooled down thanks to ventilation, the sound usually returns to normal.

Customer reports:

  • “The problem appears when the car heats up after standing in the sun for a long time. Then, after starting, the sound is hoarse from all speakers”
  • “After switching on and after a few minutes, noises start to be heard, shorter or longer, which disappear after about 15 minutes and the radio plays normally until the next start, when the situation repeats”

What happens: At high temperature (60-70°C in the glovebox after standing in the sun) damaged solder joints lose conductivity under thermal stress, that is, deformation resulting from the material heating up. Once cooled, the stress decreases and conductivity temporarily returns.

This clearly shows that the solder joints are damaged — healthy connections work stably regardless of temperature. In practice, the problem is often seasonal: in summer it is clearly worse, and in winter it may not occur at all.

When does the problem appear?

The typical age at first failure is 7-11 years from production. The model years most often affected are 2013-2016 (MIB 1). It is worth noting that the problem appears regardless of mileage — the car may have 50,000 km or 250,000 km.

It’s not your fault. The problem affects cars kept in garages and parked on the street, with low mileage and taxis, weekend cars and daily drivers. There is no single usage pattern here — it is a matter of the unit’s age and the particular series, not how the car is used.

What causes the fault?

Cause — cold solder joints in the audio path

The audio path in the MIB consists of hundreds of soldered connections, i.e. points where components are connected to the board, between the audio processors, amplifier and main board. Each of these connections is a separate soldering point.

In MIB 1 (2013-2016), the solder joints in the audio path have a characteristic issue — over time, microcracks appear in the solder joint. Under a microscope you can see gaps in the solder, although to the naked eye everything looks normal. In fact, you can even see mechanical play in the component pins.

Why this happens:

  • Thermal cycles: the unit heats up (to 60-70°C in summer in the glovebox), then cools down (in winter, at night). The solder expands and contracts — after a few years, a micro-damage appears.
  • Vibrations: every pothole and every bend in the road creates vibrations that put stress on solder joints.

How it works (or rather doesn’t): the connection looks fine to the naked eye, but under the microscope microcracks are visible in the solder joint. Electrical conductivity is interrupted or unstable.

The symptoms confirm it: crackling means an unstable contact, where current flows intermittently. The sound comes back after tapping because you briefly restore contact mechanically. Silence means a completely broken connection — the component pins have lost contact with the board.

In practice, 90% of the units repaired are MIB 1 (2013-2016), and the remaining 10% are MIB 2 (from 2016). It is worth noting that this problem occurs on a massive scale in this generation of units.

Main board — audio section. Visible: power stages, capacitors. Cold solder joints form between the pins of these components and the board.

Why refurbish instead of replacing the part?

Cold solder joints do not appear in just one place. If one solder joint has micro-damage, the other joints in the same section usually have cracks too — still conductive, but already damaged.

If only one area were repaired:

  1. We remove the visible fault → we test → the unit works
  2. After 2-3 months the customer comes back → the problem returns
  3. Why does this happen? Because the other joints in that section also had cracks, only smaller ones

Comprehensive refurbishing solves this problem effectively: we repair the visible damage, that is, the joints that no longer conduct, and as a preventive measure we improve all critical joints in the audio path — that is, the path responsible for sound. We remove the old solder with GOOT desoldering braid, re-solder everything from scratch and finally check the joints under an ASH Vision microscope.

It is a bit like replacing all the bulbs in a room from a faulty batch, not just the one that has blown. In practice, only comprehensive refurbishing allows us to offer a 24-month warranty.

Can MIB / Discover Pro be repaired?

Yes. Refurbishing the audio path, that is, the section responsible for sound, solves this problem.

Professional repair of Discover PRO / MIB / Columbus

MIB refurbishing is one of our specialities in repairing factory car navigation systems for the VAG group. Below we describe the whole repair process, step by step.

The repair process has 4 stages: removal and dispatch of the unit, free diagnostics, refurbishing the audio path and final testing with return shipping. In practice, the whole process usually takes 1-3 working days (+ return delivery).

What does the repair process look like?

Step 1: removal and dispatch

Location: Passenger glove box, not the dashboard.

Tools: Two removal tools, i.e. dismantling keys — cost approx. 20-30 zł online. Insert the tools into the holes at the sides of the unit, and the unit slides out towards the front.

Removal — order of unplugging the connectors (ignition off):

  1. First the largest power and speaker connector, i.e. the quadlock
  2. Then in order: aerial, display and USB connectors
  3. Remember the latches in the connectors — it is not worth pulling them by force

Delivery options:

  • In person: you can come to us with the unit already removed (we do not offer a removal service)
  • Courier delivery: cost approx. 20-30 zł

What next: After receiving the unit, we will send an SMS/email confirming receipt and the job number.

Step 2: diagnostics (free)

Time: usually 2-4 hours.

What we do:

  • Registration in the system — SMS/email confirmation.
  • Initial test: connection to the test setup, namely a bench with a display, keypad panel, gateway and power supply.
  • Fault location: we check all sound sources — FM/AM radio, CD, SD1, SD2 and Bluetooth — as well as all channels, i.e. 4 or 8 speakers.

Diagnosis result:

  • 95% of cases: We confirm a fault in the audio path, i.e. the circuit responsible for sound → we send a quote (1230 zł) → we wait for your decision.
  • 5% of cases: The unit tests correctly → we return it with an explanation that the problem may lie in the wiring, speakers or power supply → free diagnosis, zero cost.

If you reject the quote: We return the unit at no cost. The diagnosis always remains free.

Step 3: audio path refurbishment

Time: Usually 1-2 working days.

What we do:

  1. Removing the board from the main unit housing.
  2. Refurbishment of solder joints, i.e. the points where components are connected:
  • We remove the old solder using GOOT desoldering braid.
  • As a preventative measure, we rework all critical connections in the audio path, not just the visibly damaged ones.
  1. Re-soldering: we apply fresh solder and verify the continuity of every connection.
  2. Inspection: verification under an ASH Vision microscope.
  3. Reinstalling the amplifier board back into the housing.

Step 4: testing and return shipping

Time: At least 2 hours of testing in a full environment.

What we test: all audio sources (FM/AM radio, CD, SD1/SD2, Bluetooth), all speaker channels, controls (balance, fade, volume) and source switching. In practice, we also simulate different scenarios: cold start, warm restart, source change and volume adjustment.

If we detect any irregularities, we connect VCDS, check the parameters and read the fault codes. The key point is that the unit must operate flawlessly throughout the entire test.

Installation — plug connection order:

  1. First we connect all the small plugs: USB, display, antenna
  2. Last of all: the large power connector (Quadlock)

90% of customers fit the unit themselves — in practice, it is simple.

MIB repair vs alternatives – cost comparison

OptionPriceWarrantyTurnaround time
OEMatic refurbishment1230 zł24 months1-3 days
Used online1500-3000 zł14 daysA few days
New authorised dealer unit≥10,000 zł24 monthsDepending on availability

Refurbishment vs a new unit:

A new unit costs around 10,000 zł or more. Refurbishment is 1230 zł, and turnaround is 1-3 days. In practice, your unit after refurbishment works just like a new one, so it is worth considering whether it makes sense to overpay.

Refurbishment vs a used one from Allegro:

A used unit costs 1500-3000 zł, but usually you only get a 14-day warranty. You do not know its history, which means it may have exactly the same problem. It is worth noting that 14 days is far too little to properly assess whether the equipment is working correctly. You know your own unit, so it is often better to repair it and keep the equipment original. Refurbishment also comes with a 24-month warranty.

Test environment – how we test MIB

The test bench setup is simple: the original VW/Audi display (touchscreen), the keyboard panel, i.e. the physical buttons, the gateway — the CAN communication gateway, power supply and the diagnostic interface.

Testing method: Each unit goes through a full test cycle. We check all functions in different scenarios: cold start, i.e. powering up from scratch, warm restart after switching off, source switching (radio → CD → SD → Bluetooth), volume changes in the 0-100% range and navigation with voice prompts.

VCDS diagnostics: We only use it when functional tests reveal irregularities. VCDS — a diagnostic tool — lets us check the operating parameters of the unit, read faults from memory and clear operating faults. Not every unit requires this kind of diagnostics. It is a backup tool, used only when it is genuinely needed.

Frequently asked questions about MIB repair

How do you tell whether the fault is in the MIB unit, rather than the speakers or wiring?

No sound from ALL sources at once (radio, CD, SD, Bluetooth, navigation). If the display works and the menus respond, but there is silence from the speakers, it is the MIB. If the problem were in the speakers or wiring, it would affect only part of the speakers, not all of them at once.

Does the problem affect only older cars?

Typical age at the first failure: 7-11 years from production. The most common are 2013-2016 model years (MIB 1), but the problem can also occur in newer cars. It does not depend on mileage – it affects cars with 50,000 km and 300,000 km equally.

I only have crackling in one speaker – is it definitely the MIB?

Probably yes. A partial MIB failure often starts with one channel. If the problem spreads (more speakers go quiet or crackle), it is almost certainly the MIB. The amplifier has separate connections for each channel – if one has a cold solder joint, the others start failing too.

The sound comes back after tapping the unit or after a reset – is it the MIB?

Yes. A classic symptom of cold solder joints. Mechanical contact (tapping) or resetting the electronics (reset) temporarily restores conductivity to the faulty connection. This confirms that the problem is in the solder joints inside the unit.

How much exactly does MIB repair cost?

1230 zł incl. VAT – the current price (as of 08.12.2025) for everything (diagnosis, refurbishment, testing, 24-month warranty, return shipping).

How long does diagnosis take and is it paid?

Diagnosis takes 2-4 hours and is completely free. If you decline the quote, we return the unit at no cost.

How many days does the whole repair take?

1-3 working days from the moment the unit is received. In 80% of cases the unit comes back to you within 2-3 days of dispatch.

Can I bring the unit in person (without shipping)?

Yes. You can bring the unit in person (already removed) or collect it after repair. We do not offer removal service. Around 30% of customers choose personal collection.

How do you remove the MIB unit from the car?

Passenger glovebox. You need two removal keys/tools (around 20-30 zł online). Insert the tools into the holes on the sides of the unit, and the unit slides out. Disconnect the plugs (remember the catches – do not pull hard). Removal takes 5 minutes.

What if the repair doesn’t work?

In 95% of cases we confirm a fault in the audio path and repair it. In 5% the unit tests correctly – in that case we return it with an explanation (the problem may be in the wiring, speakers or power supply). Diagnosis is always free, with zero cost.

Do I lose my saved data during the repair (radio stations, settings)?

No. The refurbishment concerns only the hardware (solder joints in the audio path). Your settings remain untouched.

Does the unit need coding/programming after the repair?

No. After installation, the system starts automatically when the ignition is turned on – just as before removal. No coding or programming is needed.

How long will the repair last? Warranty?

24-month warranty on what we repair (no sound, crackling, dropouts). Comprehensive refurbishment of all connections in the audio path (not only the damaged ones, but also preventively) gives a long-lasting result.

What if the problem returns after the repair?

24-month warranty – if the problem returns, we repair it again free of charge. The warranty covers the audio path (no sound, crackling, dropouts).

Does the repair affect other functions (navigation, Bluetooth, CarPlay)?

No. The refurbishment concerns only the audio path. All other functions (GPS navigation, Bluetooth, menu, CarPlay) work as before.

Should I buy a new MIB unit?

Brand new: ≥10,000 zł. Refurbishment: 1230 zł + 1-3 days + no coding. After refurbishment, your unit works identically to a new one.

Is a used unit from Allegro a good idea?

You overpay (~1500 zł vs 1230 zł for refurbishment) + only 14 days’ warranty + unknown history. A used unit may have exactly the same problem (cold solder joints in MIB 1). 14 days is too short to be sure the unit is OK. You know the history of your unit – it’s better to repair it.

Why not replace only the faulty parts (spot repair)?

Cold solder joints occur in many places at once. If one connection has micro-damage, the others also have cracks (still conducting, but already damaged). Replacing only the damaged parts = the problem returns after 1-3 months. Comprehensive refurbishment of all connections = long-lasting result + 24-month warranty.

What is the most common symptom before complete loss of sound in MIB?

Crackling and audio dropouts. The problem starts with occasional crackles (once a week), then they intensify (daily), then the sound begins to drop out and eventually disappears completely. This is a progressive cold solder joint failure – the connections gradually lose conductivity.

Does temperature affect the no-sound problem in MIB?

Yes, in about 10% of cases. The problem appears when the car heats up after standing in the sun. After starting, the sound is crackly or distorted. After 15-20 minutes of driving (when the unit cools down), the sound returns to normal. This is the thermal variant of cold solder joints – at high temperature the damaged connections expand and lose conductivity.

What temporarily restores sound in MIB?

“Fake” update from an SD card (electronics restart)
System reset (long press of the power button)
A tap on the unit in the glovebox (a mechanical intermittent contact)
Locking and unlocking the car (restart of the whole system)
These are only temporary fixes – the solder joints are still damaged and the problem will return.

Does no sound in MIB affect all audio sources?

Yes. FM/AM radio, CD, SD cards, Bluetooth, navigation – all sources lose sound at the same time. The signal from each source goes through the same audio path. If cold solder joints have broken the connection between the processor and the amplifier, it doesn’t matter which source you’re listening to.

How can I check whether the problem is in the MIB unit and not the speakers?

If the lack of sound affects ALL sources (radio, CD, SD, Bluetooth) and ALL speakers at the same time – the problem is in the MIB. If the speakers or wiring were to blame, it would affect only some of the speakers. The unit sits in the passenger glovebox – there is CD + 2x SD there.

Which car models are affected by the no-sound problem in MIB?

MIB 1 and MIB 2 (called Discover Pro, Discover Media Pro, Columbus) in VAG cars from 2013-2019: Golf 7, Passat B8, Audi A3 8V, Octavia 3, Leon 3, Tiguan 2, A4 B9, A5 F5, Q2, Superb 3, Kodiaq, Karoq, Ateca. The most common are 2013-2016 models (MIB 1).

Audio problem in an older VAG system?

If you have a Golf 6, Passat B6/B7 or Tiguan 1 with the RNS510 system, see our article on RNS510 repair – crackling, buzzing and bass thump
