The fault in the factory Rockford Fosgate amplifier (models 8701A474, 8701A565, 8701A409) used in Mitsubishi (Outlander III, ASX, Lancer) is most often a main board failure caused by flooding or moisture, resulting from its unfortunate location under the seat. It shows up as complete loss of sound, current draw when parked, or noise in the speakers.
Silence from the speakers, even though the radio in your Mitsubishi works perfectly. A loud whistle or hiss that does not go away even after switching off the ignition. Or perhaps a flat battery every morning because something is “stealing” power while the car is parked?
The cause is almost certainly the amplifier (models 8701A474, 8701A565 or related) unluckily located under the front passenger seat.
The problem almost always comes down to two causes: flooding (water or a drink getting under the seat) or short circuit (for example after trying to start the car with a booster).
Before you spend 7000 zł on a new module at an authorised dealer or risk 2000 zł on a used one (which is likely damp as well), we have a concrete, lasting solution. We offer full refurbishment of the main board. We do not “patch” the problem – we fix it at source. We specialise in repairing these units and are one of the few companies in Europe willing to refurbish their main boards.
The repair costs 1476 zł incl. VAT, takes 1-5 working days and comes with a 24-month warranty.
How do you identify the Rockford Fosgate 8701A474 amplifier?
This is an 8-channel Mitsubishi (Melco) / Rockford Fosgate amplifier. It is located under the passenger seat and has three distinctive connectors (18-pin, 14-pin, 14-pin).
This is an advanced, multi-channel amplifier with an output of 650W or 860W (depending on the version), controlled by a digital bus (IE-BUS). The easiest way to identify it is by its location and part numbers.

Identification details
- Manufacturer: Mitsubishi (Melco) or Rockford Fosgate (both names are often used interchangeably).
- Location: Under the front passenger seat, in a special recess in the floor.
- Part NO numbers (interchangeable):
- 8701A409 (CV-0MW3R45)
- 8701A474 (CV-0MW3R45-2)
- 8701A565 (CV-0MW3R45-4)
- Car models:
- Mitsubishi Outlander III (from 2013)
- Mitsubishi ASX (from 2013)
- Mitsubishi Lancer (including Sportback, Evolution)
- Mitsubishi Galant Fortis
- Mitsubishi RVR
The amplifier sits at the lowest point in the floor, which makes it horribly exposed to flooding – whether from a spilled drink, meltwater from snow on the mats, or a leak in the car. Customers often say they found the amplifier “filled with mud” or “completely rusted”.},{
Symptoms of the fault – 4 main signs
The main symptoms are complete silence from the speakers, current draw that drains the battery, loud hiss/whine (even with the radio switched off), or no sound from only some of the speakers.
If you are experiencing any of the following problems, the amplifier is 99% to blame.
1. Complete silence (radio works)
This is the classic symptom. The radio starts up normally, you can change stations, the navigation shows the map, the disc spins — but absolutely no sound comes from the speakers. Just silence.
2. Current draw (flat battery)
You come back to the car in the morning and find the battery completely flat. After charging, the problem returns the next day. This happens because the damaged (usually water-damaged) amplifier has a short circuit in the power supply section and does not go to sleep, drawing current non-stop.
3. Hiss, whine or a burning smell
You can hear strange sounds — a loud hiss, whine or crackling — that do not respond to the volume control.
Crucially: This sound is often present even after switching the radio off and locking the car. This is a very dangerous symptom indicating an active short circuit in the power stage. Sometimes it is accompanied by the characteristic smell of burnt electronics.
4. No sound from half of the speakers
The problem can worsen gradually. At first, the rear speakers stop working, or the entire left/right side. This is usually the first sign that corrosion on the main board is starting to eat away at more tracks. Usually, after a short time, the amplifier falls completely silent.
Do you recognise any of these symptoms? Don't wait. Current draw or whining noises point to a serious short circuit. Disconnect the amplifier to avoid deeper damage or even fire, and send it for a free diagnostic.
Why does this amplifier fail? Main causes
In 90% of cases, the cause is flooding or long-term dampness, caused by the unfortunate location of the amplifier. The second common cause is an electrical short circuit (for example after using a booster).
Cause 1: Water ingress or dampness (the main issue)
- Engineers placed the amplifier under the passenger seat, at the lowest point of the floor. It works like a drain sump. Any spilled drink, water from a bottle, a leaking sunroof or water brought in on shoes in winter – all of it runs down and collects in the amplifier housing.
- The metal housing is not 100% sealed. Water getting inside wreaks havoc on the main board. Our customers often describe it vividly: "after removing the amplifier, it turned out that the water had damaged the board" or "I opened it and the circuit board was flooded with mud". We know similar stories from Logic7 amplifier failures.
Cause 2: Short circuit or voltage surge (booster)
Water combined with electricity (even standby current) leads to rapid corrosion of tracks and short circuits on the multi-layer main board. These short circuits are directly responsible for the symptoms you noticed:
- Complete silence (when key audio components are damaged).
- Current draw (when the short circuit "wakes" the amplifier while parked).
- Noise and whistling (when the short circuit creates interference on the speaker outputs).
Cause 3: Weak battery
- Long-term driving on a weak, undercharged battery causes unstable power supply (voltage drops, "noise" in the electrical system), which puts extra strain on the amplifier electronics and shortens its service life.
Repair process step by step (1-5 days)
Our process is simple and 100% transparent. It takes 1-5 working days in total: you send the amplifier, we diagnose it free of charge, quote the repair, and after approval – refurbish it and send it back with a 24-month warranty.
Step 1: Contact and shipping (day 1)
You fill in the service form on our website or call us. Then you safely pack just the amplifier – we do not need the radio or cables. You send the parcel to our address.
Step 2: Diagnostics and final quote (day 2-3)
When the parcel reaches us, we start diagnostics immediately. We open the unit, assess the extent of the water damage and analyse the power supply circuit. We contact you by phone with a specific quote (usually a fixed price of 1476 zł incl. VAT) and confirmation of the repair time.
Important: Diagnostics are always free of charge. If for any reason you decide not to proceed with the repair, we return the equipment at no cost. No risk on your side.
Step 3: Refurbishment and testing (day 3-4)
After your approval, we carry out a full refurbishment:
- Cleaning: The main board is cleaned ultrasonically to remove all traces of corrosion and flood "mud".
- Board repair: We rebuild damaged (rotted) tracks and carry out professional main board repair at component replacement level, not just "soldering" visible damage.
- Prevention: We also replace components that, from experience, we know are vulnerable and may fail in the future. We do this so you do not have to come back to us in a few months.
- Testing: Finally, we test the amplifier on a dedicated test bench equipped with the original Mitsubishi radio and the correct wiring loom. We check every one of the 8 channels and the stability of operation.
This is a key stage. As one of the few companies in Europe we take on the repair of these water-damaged amplifiers.
Step 4: Settlement and safe return (day 4-5)
We pack the fully working unit together with a written 24-month warranty. After settlement, we send it back by insured parcel. All that is left for you is installation (Plug & Play, no coding) and enjoying the sound again.

Refurbishment vs Used vs New – Cost comparison
Refurbishment is many times cheaper than buying a new unit from an authorised dealer. Most importantly, unlike a risky used part, our repair comes with a 2-year warranty.
Before you make a decision, look at the numbers.
| Option | Estimated cost | Warranty | Risk / Drawbacks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Refurbishment (OEMatic) | 1476 zł incl. VAT | 24 months | None. You receive a fully working, tested unit with 2-year protection. |
| Used (Auctions) | 800–2000 zł | No warranty or start-up warranty (14 days) | Extremely high. You are buying a part from a car with an unknown history. These amplifiers are just as vulnerable to water damage. It is a gamble where you could lose 2000 zł. |
| New (authorised dealer / Dealer) | Cost many times higher | 24 months | The cost is disproportionately high. You receive the same component, which is just as vulnerable to water damage if the leak problem in the car returns. |
The choice is simple. Instead of risking 2000 zł on a used unit that may be in worse condition than yours, order a professional refurbishment with a 2-year warranty for 1476 zł.
