You get into your Porsche, turn the key, and the screen that should show the map greets you with an image straight out of an old, badly tuned TV? Chaotic lines, coloured “gibberish” and the famous “ant war” instead of the menu? If that sounds familiar, know that you are not alone. This is a classic and unfortunately common fault of the factory Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system.

This display fault takes all the enjoyment out of driving and owning such an advanced car. The system, which is the command centre, becomes completely useless. You can no longer use the navigation, radio or even the reversing camera. But before you start looking for a used unit with an uncertain history or call a Porsche Centre for a quote for a new navigation system, stop. We have a proven and lasting solution for this.

In this article, we will show you why your PCM3 system fails in this way and what the process of its professional refurbishment looks like (repair at a fixed price of 2460 zł incl. VAT takes 2-6 working days in total, and you receive a 24-month written warranty for the service performed).

How can you identify a faulty PCM3 unit?

The artefact display problem mainly affects two generations of the PCM system produced for Porsche in approximately 2008-2016. The easiest way to verify the model is to compare the appearance of your unit with the photo below and check the details on the label.

A typical symptom of damage to the graphics processor in Porsche PCM3.0 / 3.1 – the screen displays the so-called “gibberish”, which completely prevents use of the unit.

Key identification data from the label:

  • Model: PCM3.0 or PCM3 E1
  • Manufacturer: Harman / Becker
  • Part Number: BE6674, BE6684
  • Fitted in models: Porsche 911 (997), Boxster (987), Cayman (987), Panamera (970), Cayenne (9PA/92A)

If you are still not sure — send us a photo of your radio – we will confirm the model free of charge before repair.

“Ant war” and more – typical symptoms of the fault

Graphics circuit damage in PCM3 produces very distinctive and easy-to-recognise symptoms. If any of the points below describes the situation in your car, you are in the right place:

  • Total picture interference: Right after start-up, the screen is covered in random pixels, lines and “gibberish”, which customers often describe as “snow” or the “ant war”. The content is completely illegible.
  • No response and instability: Although the unit itself may respond to buttons (for example, change radio stations “blind”), the display makes any operation impossible.
  • Temporary return to normal: Sometimes, for a very short time, the image may display correctly, giving false hope. Unfortunately, the interference returns almost immediately, which confirms permanent hardware damage.

Why does the graphics in PCM3 fail? The real cause.

Contrary to some opinions, the cause of this fault rarely lies in the software or damage to the LCD display itself. From our many years of experience, the problem has one specific source:

Damaged graphics-generating circuits.

In simple terms: electronic components such as the graphics processor and its memory were designed with a defined service life. After several dozen years of continuous heating and cooling cycles, their internal structure degrades. Although advanced for their time, these systems age in a specific way, while the manufacturer is constantly developing much newer generations, as described in Porsche's official communications.

What does the repair process look like step by step?

What exactly is Porsche PCM3 radio and navigation refurbishment?

It is the process of restoring a factory unit to full working order by replacing worn or damaged electronic components, in this case the graphics chips, with brand-new ones. This ensures durability and reliability comparable to a new unit, at much lower cost.

Our process is simple, transparent and based on a fundamental principle: you only pay for a successful repair.

  1. Contact and dispatch. Get in touch with us to arrange the nearest available date and agree the most convenient way to send the unit to our workshop.
  2. Reliable assessment (1-3 working days). Once we receive the radio, we connect it to our testing environment. Repairing these units requires enormous precision, because manufacturers do not provide service schematics. In the most difficult cases, to pinpoint the source of the problem precisely, we have to desolder key components and manually trace the connections between the chips. We use specialist microscopes (Ash Vision, Tagarno Magnus HD) for this, which guarantees the highest precision.
  3. Communication and your decision.
    • If the fault is confirmed: We contact you, confirm the fixed repair cost (2460 zł incl. VAT) and the terms (24-month warranty). We only proceed after your full approval.
    • If the unit is working: You pay absolutely nothing. We send the radio back at our expense and advise where else to look for the cause in your car’s wiring.
  4. Actual repair (1-3 working days). We replace the damaged graphics components with brand-new ones.
  5. Rigorous final testing. After the repair, the unit goes through a series of tests checking its stability, including under load and after full warm-up. We must be 100% certain that the fault has been permanently removed.
  6. Safe return shipping. We send the working and tested radio back to you. After installation in the car, it works straight away, without any additional coding.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions

We answer the most common questions about Porsche PCM3 repair, both those asked directly and those that appear in Google search.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions

Is it better to repair PCM3 or buy a used radio?

It is definitely better to repair the original unit. A refurbishment priced at 2460 zł gives you a 24-month warranty on key new components. A used radio priced at 2000-5000 zł is a “pig in a poke” with the same potential fault and most often only a 14-day start-up warranty.

How much does a new Porsche PCM 3.0 unit cost at an authorised dealer?

The cost of a new module from an authorised Porsche dealer is in the region of more than 15,000 zł incl. VAT, which makes professional refurbishment a many times more cost-effective option.

Will the unit need coding after repair?

Absolutely not. The repair is purely hardware-based and we do not interfere with your unit’s software. Once refitted in the car, everything will work as before.

Can you activate additional functions during the repair?

Yes! This is one of our additional services. On request, “on the bench”, we can activate hidden functions (e.g. Sport Chrono), update maps (if available for your PCM version) or even change the start-up logo to any one you choose.

Do you also repair other faults in PCM3 radios?

Yes, we specialise in these units. We also solve PCM3 reset problems
, and our general Porsche navigation repair offer
covers a wide range of faults. We also help with problems in other audio components in these cars, such as Porsche ASK amplifier repair.

Can you repair the radio immediately, while you wait?

Unfortunately not. This fault is too complex, and the repair process and subsequent testing take time. Each unit must go through a full test procedure, including heat-soak tests, which guarantees the effectiveness of the repair and allows us to offer a 24-month warranty.

Book the repair and get a working screen back in your Porsche

Your original PCM3 navigation unit is a valuable piece of equipment. Don’t let the “ant war” spoil your driving pleasure. Instead of taking a risk with a used part or overpaying at an authorised dealer, choose a reliable and lasting refurbishment.
