No sound in your Ford Kuga, Escape, Ranger or Lincoln (2012-2019)? This is usually the result of cold solder joints in the ACM radio tuner module — in other words, microcracks in the soldered connections. We repair this module for 984 zł, in 1-3 days, with a 24-month warranty. Diagnostics are free.
The radio is silent, but the screen works normally? Does crackling get worse over weeks? Does disconnecting the battery help, but only until the car is locked again? These are typical symptoms of a faulty ACM Panasonic module. After repair, the module comes back ready to fit — with no coding and no adaptation.
Does not work: sound from the speakers, volume control, switching to FM/CD.
Works normally: display, Bluetooth (connection), navigation (image).
Below is a step-by-step guide: how to identify the ACM, what the symptoms are, what causes the fault, what the repair process looks like and how this solution differs from a used unit and the dealer. Do you have a different audio system, for example APIM or Sony? In that case, it is worth using the → free quote option.
What is the ACM module and how do you identify it?
ACM (Audio Control Module) is the factory audio module in Ford vehicles. It combines three functions in one housing: the FM/DAB tuner, i.e. digital radio, the audio amplifier and the CD drive. Put simply, this is the unit in the dashboard where you insert the CD. It is worth noting that ACM is just one of many units that OEMatic refurbishes — list of car radios we repair.
ACM and APIM — how do you tell them apart?
Ford split the multimedia system into two modules:
- ACM = sound, in other words: radio tuner + amplifier + CD. No sound, crackling or frozen volume usually points to a problem with the ACM. If you have a separate amplifier, such as Sony or B&O, it is also worth considering audio amplifier repair.
- APIM = the screen and SYNC system, in other words Ford's multimedia system. Is the touchscreen not working, does the screen freeze or are there navigation problems? That usually means an APIM fault.
In practice, if there is no sound but the display works normally, the fault is almost certainly on the ACM side.

Symptoms of a faulty Ford ACM module
A fault in the ACM module usually shows itself in five ways — from crackling in the speakers to complete silence. It is worth noting that the problem affects all sound sources at the same time, i.e. FM, Bluetooth, CD and USB. If only one source stops working while the others play normally, you should look for the cause elsewhere. A similar problem, namely no sound from all sources, also occurs in MIB3 Preh modules in VW Passat, Golf and Tiguan.
1. The radio does not play — complete silence from all sources
The radio connects to your phone via Bluetooth, the display shows album covers, and the interface responds to touch — but nothing comes out of the speakers. The volume remains locked at 0 and the slider does not respond. In other words, it makes no real difference whether you switch on FM, Bluetooth, USB or CD — it is silent everywhere.
This is one of the most common symptoms when ACM modules come in for refurbishment.
2. Crackling in the speakers — sound cuts out and comes back
It usually starts innocently enough: with an occasional crackle while listening to the radio. Week by week, the crackling becomes more frequent and more noticeable. First the sound disappears for a few seconds, comes back, then cuts out again moments later. At some point, the silence lasts longer than the music itself.
“It started with awful crackling while listening; after a while the radio would start playing, but you couldn’t, for example, turn the volume down or change the station.”
— customer report, Ford Kuga 2014
So if you hear crackling, it is worth treating it as the first warning sign. Cold joints on the main board — that is, weakened or cracked soldered connections — may still maintain contact, but with every thermal cycle the cracks get larger. In practice, the ending is predictable: complete silence. It is worth noting that audio crackling is also a known issue in VW RNS 510 — the cause is similar, though the module is different.
3. The radio jumps to AM — functions freeze
The radio switches itself to AM wavebands. As a result, you cannot go back to FM, change station or adjust the volume. The display shows 0 for the volume and does not respond to attempts to change it in either direction.
“The radio switches to AM and cannot be changed back. Before the fault it was crackling.”
— customer report, Ford Kuga
4. No source switching — FM, CD do not work
In this case, the module simply ignores source-change commands. You cannot switch to FM or to the CD. What is more, the source button does not respond or only switches between silence and silence.
5. The module ‘dies’ after the car is locked — battery reset as a temporary fix
You disconnect the battery, reconnect it — and everything works. Navigation, MP3, radio, Bluetooth. But then you lock the car, come back in the morning — and nothing again. The only way to get it working again is another battery reset.
“After disconnecting the battery and switching it back on it works; after locking the car it does not. Until now, for 4 years everything was fine. SYNC 3, Polish menu version.”
— customer report, Ford Escape 2017
Recognise any of these symptoms? It is worth noting that crackling is usually the first sign — the longer you wait, the more sections of the main board degrade. Send the module for a free diagnosis.
No sound in Ford Kuga, Escape, Ranger, Lincoln — the same ACM module
Ford Kuga does not play radio. Escape lost sound after a few years. Ranger crackles on FM. Lincoln is silent on Bluetooth. In practice, all these 2012-2019 vehicles have the same ACM Panasonic radio tuner module — and the same susceptibility to cracked solder joints.
The symptoms are the same regardless of model. The only differences are the Part Numbers, for example CV4T in Kuga, GJ5T in Escape and EB3T in Ranger, and the removal procedure. The repair itself is, however, the same — we refurbish the cracked connections and secure the weaker sections of the board. It costs 984 zł and takes 1-3 days.
Why ACM fails — cold solder joints on the main board
The cause is the degradation of soldered connections on the ACM module’s main board, or PCB. The joints crack under the influence of years of heating and cooling cycles — these are the so-called cold joints, in other words cold solder joints. In most cases the problem affects ACM Panasonic modules fitted to Ford vehicles from 2012-2019.
How cold solder joints form
The ACM module operates in the dashboard, a location exposed to extreme temperatures. During the day the engine heats this space to 60 degrees, and at night the temperature drops to ambient. Each such cycle causes microscopic movement in the solder joints. After several thousand such cycles, usually after 4-7 years of use, the joints begin to crack. A cracked joint means intermittent or completely zero electrical contact.
What is more, cold solder joints appear in different places on the main board — including the power section, near the power amplifiers and at the mounting points of SMD components, that is surface-mounted components — rather than in one specific spot. That is why the symptoms can vary: from crackling, which indicates marginal contact, through frozen functions, meaning partial loss of communication, all the way to complete silence, which means zero contact in the audio section. The same mechanism, namely degradation of connections on the PCB, causes no sound in VW Discover Pro.
Why battery reset ‘helps’ only temporarily
Disconnecting the power and reconnecting it restarts the module. If the cracked joint is still maintaining marginal contact, the module works properly for a short time. But after the next thermal cycle, that is, the sequence lock the car → cool down → heat up, the contact breaks again.
This is not a repair — it is more of a sticking plaster for the symptom. It is worth noting that each subsequent reset usually works less well, because the cracks get larger with every thermal cycle.
Why it affects 2012-2019 vehicles
The problem is typical of ACM Panasonic modules fitted to Ford vehicles from 2012 onwards. After 4-7 years of use, the solder joints reach the threshold at which the fault starts to appear. By comparison, older modules, that is those from before 2012, have a different audio architecture. Newer ones, after 2019, use a modified production process.
Cracked joints will not repair themselves. The battery reset is a plaster, not a solution to the problem. The only effective method is to refurbish the damaged connections on the main board.

How ACM module repair is carried out — step by step
The whole process takes 1-3 working days from the moment the module arrives at the workshop. Courier collection is free, diagnosis is free, and return postage is included in the price.
1. Sending the module
First of all, the courier collects the module from you at no extra cost — collection is included in the repair price. Alternatively, you can send the parcel yourself to the workshop address. In practice, it is worth using the guide: how to safely pack a module for shipping.
→ How to send a module for repair
2. Free diagnosis
Next, the module goes to a dedicated test bench with the SYNC system — version 1, 2 or 3, matched to your car. This bench replicates the conditions in the vehicle: BCM (Body Control Module), OBD2 (on-board diagnostics), the control keypad and a full set of displays.
As part of the diagnosis, the test covers functions such as the FM/DAB tuner, Bluetooth input, CD, USB, volume adjustment and source switching.
Importantly, if the module turns out to be fault-free, you pay nothing. That is OEMatic’s policy.
FORScan, or any other diagnostic tool such as IDS or FDRS, will not show cracked joints. This is a mechanical fault, not a DTC error. The key point is that reliable diagnosis only comes from testing on a dedicated bench with the full SYNC environment.
3. Refurbishment
OEMatic renews damaged solder joints on the main board, i.e. the PCB. But that is not the only stage. In addition, PCB sections known to be prone to this fault are also repaired preventively — in other words, it is about protection for years, not just a few months.
In other words, this is not a temporary patch involving heating one point. First we eliminate the specific fault. Then we protect the sections of the board that, from experience, we know are prone to the same problem returning.
4. Final test and return shipment
Finally, after refurbishment, the module undergoes a full test on the SYNC bench. The check covers every audio source, volume adjustment, and switching between FM, DAB, CD, USB and Bluetooth. The module must pass every test. Only then is it sent out.
Return shipping by courier is included in the repair price. Order fulfilment details — from collection to return shipment.

Ford ACM repair vs used unit vs dealership — comparison
ACM refurbishment: 984 zł with a 24-month warranty. A used unit with the identical PN, i.e. part number: 1500-2000 zł with no warranty. Below you will find a full comparison of the three options.
| Criterion | OEMatic refurbishment | Used | New dealership module |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | 984 zł | 500–3000 zł | > 3000 zł |
| Warranty | 24 months | 14 days (auction) | ASO |
| DAB | ✅ Your original module | ❓ It may not have it | ✅ |
| Adaptation | Not needed | Yes — a few hundred zł | Included in the fitting price |
| Risk | Zero — if the repair turns out to be impossible, there are no costs | High — because a 14-day warranty is of little practical value | Zero |
| Diagnosis | On the test bench | None | Dealer |
| Time | 1-3 working days | Usually a few days | Order |
The trap of a “cheaper” used unit
By buying a cheaper module with a different part number, you may end up with a version without DAB — the digital radio that was in the original vehicle. With a more expensive module with the same number, you pay 1500-2000 zł for a part with exactly the same solder joint degradation, which means the fault may return. Usually with no real warranty.
It is also worth factoring in the hidden cost: a module from another vehicle may require adaptation, i.e. tailoring to the car. In practice, that means another few hundred zł at the workshop.
