The USB port fault in the Kia Sportage IV navigation unit (model IA88613QLNG) is the result of liquid being spilt onto the main board (coffee, drink, water). Electrochemical corrosion destroys tracks and components in the USB controller section, causing complete loss of charging, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functions (while other functions, such as Bluetooth and radio, work normally).

You plug your phone into the car, expecting Google Maps or Spotify to start, but nothing happens. The screen does not respond, and the phone does not charge. You swap the cable for a new one, try another phone – same result. Silence.

Many Kia Sportage IV owners at this point are told by the dealer: “the radio needs replacing”. The cost of a new unit often exceeds several thousand złoty. However, the problem is not in the USB socket in the dashboard, nor in the software. It is physical damage to the electronics inside the radio, caused by liquid.

In this article, we will show you why “cleaning” the main board with spirit is not enough and what professional main board reconstruction involves, which we carry out for 984 zł incl. VAT (the repair takes 3 working days, and you receive a 24-month warranty in writing).

How do you identify the Kia Sportage IA88613QLNG navigation radio?

Your radio is model IA88613QLNG if you find Part NO 96560-F1920FMV on the rear label. This is the factory navigation radio fitted to the Kia Sportage fourth generation with an 8-inch screen.

Label details

Check this information on the navigation unit label:

Identification label of the Kia Sportage IA88613QLNG radio with Part NO 96560-F1920FMV and Hyundai Mobis logo
Identification label with model number and visible stains
  • Model: IA88613QLNG
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Mobis (OEM – original parts manufacturer for Kia)
  • Part NO: 96560-F1920FMV
  • Car models: Kia Sportage IV (QL) 2016-2021

Look at the metal casing of your radio, especially around the label area (as in the photo above). If you can see dark streaks, stains or marks on the metal, you can be 99% sure that water has got inside and is eating away at the electronics.

USB fault symptoms in the Kia Sportage radio

The main symptoms are a complete lack of response when USB is connected, non-working Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, while Bluetooth and the radio continue to work properly. If you recognise these symptoms, your radio needs main board restoration.

1. No response at all when connecting a phone via USB

You connect the USB cable to your phone and to the socket in the armrest. The radio screen shows no message. The phone does not start charging. The system behaves as if nothing has been connected – zero response.

2. USB flash drive with music is not detected

You insert a USB flash drive that previously worked without a problem. The radio ignores it. The USB option does not appear in the audio source menu. You try another USB flash drive – the same thing.

3. The phone does not charge through the radio’s USB

The cable is working properly (it charges at home), but when connected to the radio the phone does not charge. This is often the first sign that something is wrong with the USB port.

Such faults also occur in radio-navigation units from Toyota.

4. Android Auto does not start

You connect an Android phone with a USB cable. The Android Auto screen does not appear. The phone does not ask for permission to connect. The Android Auto app on the phone does not respond to the connection.

If you also have touchscreen problems in Kia/Hyundai radio-navigation units, this may indicate wider damage to the main board or the touchscreen itself.

5. Apple CarPlay does not work

An iPhone connected by cable does not start CarPlay. There is no message on the radio screen, and no request on the phone to trust the device.

6. Bluetooth works normally

Interestingly, Bluetooth connects without any problem. You can make calls hands-free and stream music wirelessly. This confirms that the problem is limited to the USB section.

7. FM/DAB radio works correctly

The radio tuner picks up stations without interference. The sound is clear. This is further proof that the fault is located in one section of the main board.

8. The touchscreen responds correctly

Navigation through the menu works smoothly. The screen responds to touch. All functions apart from USB are working.

Do you recognise these symptoms? There is one cause – and it can be repaired.

Cause of the fault – liquid damage and corrosion

Your radio was exposed to liquid (coffee, a drink, air-conditioning water). The liquid got inside and caused electrochemical corrosion in the USB controller section. The corrosion destroyed tracks and connections, which is why the USB no longer works.

What it looks like – microscope photos

On the label of this particular radio you can see signs of liquid damage – stains and streaks. But the true scale of the damage only becomes visible under the microscope. Here is what we found on the main board:

Electrochemical corrosion near the USB controller in the Kia Sportage radio, visible shielding cover and SMSC chip, magnification x13.37
Extensive corrosion near the USB controller screen, magnification x13.37

The brown-black deposits are products of electrochemical corrosion. They form when liquid (especially a sweet drink or coffee with milk) reacts with copper and tin on the board in the presence of electrical voltage.

The corrosion works its way under SMD components, destroying connections. The components lose contact with the board and rot away.

Why has the USB stopped working?

The USB port is located in the lower part of the centre console, close to the armrest. This is the place where drinks are most often spilled. The liquid runs down, gets through gaps into the radio and settles on the main board – right around the USB controller.

In this unit, the corrosion was extensive – in the USB section. Even so, we were able to carry out a full refurbishment.

We see similar damage in the Hyundai i20 navigation unit – the flooding mechanism is identical.

Important: Resetting the radio, updating the software or replacing the USB cable will not help. The damage is physical – at the printed circuit board level.

Repair process step by step

Refurbishment involves removing the corrosion, rebuilding the damaged tracks and applying a new protective layer. The whole process takes 3 working days and ends with a full USB, Android Auto and CarPlay test.

Stage 1: Removal and damage assessment

After receiving the radio, we remove the casing and the main board. Under the microscope we assess the extent of the corrosion and plan the scope of the repair.

Stage 2: Removing the corrosion

We mechanically and chemically remove all corrosion products. After cleaning, pink areas are visible – this is healthy, exposed copper:

Main board after corrosion removal, before applying the solder mask

We desolder the corroded USB controller and the adjacent components. At this stage it often turns out that small passive components (resistors, capacitors) fall off on their own when touched with tweezers – their solder pads have ceased to exist as a result of the corrosion.

Stage 3: Track reconstruction

We rebuild broken conductive tracks. This is the most difficult stage. Under the microscope, we manually restore broken tracks and vias between layers. We have to reconnect points that have lost contact, creating new "paths" for digital signals.

Stage 4: New solder mask (protective layer)

We apply a new solder mask (a UV-cured protective coating) to the repaired areas. It protects the board against corrosion returning:

New solder mask applied, SMD components removed for replacement

The rebuilt connections are very delicate and prone to oxidation. That is why we cover them with a special green UV-cured solder mask. It creates a new, hard insulating layer, protecting the copper from moisture and short circuits.

Stage 5: Replacement of damaged components

If corrosion has damaged electronic components (resistors, capacitors, integrated circuits), we replace them with new ones.

We fit a brand new controller and a full set of passive components.

Stage 6: Functional test

After the repair, we do not send the radio back "blindly". We connect it on the workshop bench to a simulator, checking the stability of the connection with Android Auto and music playback from USB.

After installation, we carry out a full test:

Audio source menu – all options available:

Kia Sportage radio screen with the message Reading USB device and audio source icons DAB FM Bluetooth CarPlay Android Auto
The radio detects the USB flash drive – message "Reading USB device..."

The radio detects the connected flash drive:

The radio plays music from a USB flash drive – post-repair test

USB music playback works smoothly:

FAQ – Frequently asked questions

Answers to a few of the most common questions about USB repair in a Kia Sportage radio.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions

Why did the USB in my Kia Sportage suddenly stop working?

The most common cause is liquid spillage onto the main board – coffee, a drink or water. The liquid causes electrochemical corrosion, which destroys tracks and components in the USB controller section. This happens gradually – the radio may keep working for a few days or weeks after the spill before the corrosion breaks key connections.

Can a water-damaged radio be repaired?

Yes, in most cases a full refurbishment can be carried out. We remove the corrosion, rebuild the tracks and apply a new protective layer. The key thing is that the radio must not have been “repaired” by someone else before – failed repair attempts can make the situation worse.

How much does USB repair cost in a Kia Sportage radio?

The repair costs 984 zł incl. VAT. The price includes full diagnostics, main board refurbishment, replacement of damaged components and a 24-month warranty. Send the radio to us, we will diagnose it and provide an exact quote before the repair starts.
More questions and answers about radio-navigation repairs

How long does the repair take?

The repair itself takes 3 working days from the moment we receive the radio. With shipping both ways, the whole process takes 5-7 days.

Will Android Auto and Apple CarPlay work after the repair?

Yes. We test every repaired radio with Android Auto and CarPlay before dispatch. In the photos in this article you can see the test of this exact unit – everything works.

Will a radio reset or software update fix the problem?

No. The problem is physical – corrosion on the main board. No software update will fix a broken track on the circuit board. Physical refurbishment is needed.

Why does Bluetooth work but USB doesn’t?

Bluetooth and USB are two separate sections on the main board. Water damage often affects only the area around the USB port (because it is lower down, closer to the spill). That is why Bluetooth can work perfectly while USB is completely dead. We also repair sound and amplifier faults – if you have any additional defects.

Could it be the cable or the phone?

If you have tried another branded cable and another phone, and the radio still does not respond (no charging, no reaction on the screen) – the central unit of the radio is definitely at fault.

Do I need to code the radio after the repair?

No. We repair your original unit. The radio retains the original VIN, all settings, paired phones and maps. Fit it and it works.

Why is it not enough to replace the USB socket in the car?

The socket in the dashboard is only an “extension lead”. The control element responsible for USB communication is on the radio’s main board – and that is what has failed. Replacing the socket in the console will not fix damaged components inside the radio.

What do customers who had their equipment repaired by us say?
