Black screen in Phaeton radio-navigation

The display fault in the Phaeton can be fixed, all it needs is proper refurbishment. See how we do it.

Thank you for your interest in this article. Please note that we no longer carry out repairs on this particular unit. We are keeping the article on the blog for archiving and information purposes.
However, if you have a problem with another factory radio or navigation system, check our current services and get a free quote.

The screen works one moment and not the next — no content on the Phaeton control panel display is a typical fault in Volkswagen cars. The problem is particularly annoying because in this condition you can forget not only about no sound, but also about being able to control the car’s functions. You can also forget about controlling the climate control. Before you bin the navigation unit and start looking for another used one, read why it is better to send it to OEMatic for refurbishment. Effective repair is possible in just a few days.

Infected radios from 2002 — 2007

The service concerns the central unit, i.e. the controller with display marked 3D0 035 017X. Although people commonly say the fault is in the radio-navigation unit, in the Phaeton the navigation function is handled by a separate module, which most often has part number 3D0 919 887J. To be precise — in the European version this system was available from 2002— 2007, and for the USA market it was produced from 2004 to 2006. To perform the repair service, we need the control panel, i.e. the complete module with display.

Symptoms of the display fault in the Phaeton

If you find symptoms on the list below that are identical to yours, you can be almost certain that the central unit is responsible for the lack of display. If you notice that:

  • the screen is black from the very beginning, with no content at all
  • the display works, but it can switch itself off after some time
  • the screen does not work, but after a longer time it can switch itself on
  • horizontal lines appear on the display
  • the unit draws extra current, which drains the battery
  • the buttons do not work or respond only after a longer delay

Replacing the control panel with a used one

Buying a used one on Allegro or OLX is a quick but not very effective method. The problem of no content on the display affects most of these units. You may be lucky and get a unit that still works. Unfortunately, time is against these units and sooner or later even one that still works will stop displaying properly. So is it worth buying a working but not refurbished module? You get a 12-month warranty on a repair, and on a used one? Probably only a "start-up" warranty.

Refurbishment procedure and restoring the display content

At OEMatic we work with repair procedures — we have our own methodology for such cases. We know how long we need to verify the fault after receiving it at the workshop, to carry out the actual service, and also to pack and send it back. If your equipment has not been opened and there have been no repair attempts, the positive success rate of refurbishment is practically the case every time. If your main panel has another, unusual fault, you will receive a quote after inspection. Please remember that we do not carry out repairs without prior approval, and the invoice is issued only if the repair is successful.

Do you want to freely control the car’s functions again? Change the climate settings, listen to and choose radio stations? Have your original audio equipment working again in the car you look after? The only effective solution is proper refurbishment. Only this form of repair will give you peace of mind for a long time.
