Zenec Z-N528 screen with a padlock icon and the message Please enter password — permanent password lock

OEMatic unlocks the Zenec Z-N528 Infotainer — permanent password lock after three incorrect attempts, padlock icon on the screen: 400 zł, return included, 1-2 days, warranty of correct unlocking and restoration. Nationwide shipping, free diagnostics.

After three incorrect attempts to enter the alphanumeric password, the radio displays a padlock icon and stops working. The screen does not respond to touch, the sound does not play, and the phone will not connect via Bluetooth. The only thing that works is the reversing camera.

Not working: FM, DAB+, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, USB, HDMI.
Working: reversing camera (the video signal passes through despite the lock).

The manufacturer itself — ACR AG from Switzerland — confirms in the user manual: “Lost or forgotten Passwords require the device to be uninstalled and sent in to ZENEC Service Centre.” However, it gives neither a price nor a turnaround time. Sending it to Switzerland means weeks of waiting and a language barrier.

A new Zenec Z-N528 costs around 2000 zł. Unlocking at OEMatic is 400 zł — you save 80% and restore the full function of the radio in 1-2 days. Included in the price: reset of the attempt counter, PIN reading and permanent deactivation of the Password function. The radio comes back ready to fit.

How do you recognise the Zenec Z-N528?

You can identify the Zenec Z-N528 by the wording „Zenec Z-N528 Infotainer” on the housing label. It is an aftermarket 2-DIN radio with a 6.75-inch touchscreen — most often fitted in motorhomes and passenger cars.

In adverts and search results, the model also appears as N528, ZN528 or Z N528 — it is the same product. The label always shows the full designation: Z-N528.

Main features

This model supports: DAB+ and FM, Apple CarPlay, Google Android Auto, Bluetooth 4.2, USB × 2 (CarPlay + media), HDMI, microSD, two camera inputs (front and rear), DSP and a 4 × 50W amplifier. Capacitive LCD-TFT screen with a diagonal of 17.1 cm (6.75″).

The unit fits any car and motorhome with a 2-DIN slot. It does not require special adapters — the set includes DIN mounting keys, fascia, ISO loom and cables.

OEMatic handles Z-N528 password resets regardless of the model name variant — all you need is the ACR AG marking on the housing label.

Symptoms of the lock — what you see on the screen

After all three password attempts have been used up, a padlock icon appears on the screen. The unit does not play sound and does not connect to a phone. The only working function is the reversing camera.

Lock screen — permanent lock

This is what the Zenec Z-N528 screen looks like after three incorrect password attempts

You can see a padlock icon and the message „Please enter password” on the screen. The keyboard appears — you can enter a code, but what is the point if you do not know the code? In this state, the radio starts up every time the ignition is switched on.

Customers describe it like this: „the padlock came on and there is nothing you can do with it — only the reversing camera works”.

The protection is permanent. There is no timer. Disconnecting the power does not reset the attempt counter. The radio will not unlock itself — neither after an hour nor after a week.

Password entry screen — pre-lock state

Zenec Z-N528 screen with QWERTY keyboard and the message Bitte Passwort eingeben
QWERTY keyboard for entering the password — before permanent lock

If you see a QWERTY keyboard with the message „Bitte Passwort eingeben” or „Please input old password” — the radio is not locked yet. You still have attempts left. Do not enter random codes — each wrong attempt brings you closer to a permanent lock.

The password in the Zenec Z-N528 is alphanumeric — letters and numbers on the QWERTY keyboard. It is not a 4-digit PIN like in factory car radios.

The only working function: reversing camera

The video signal from the reversing camera passes through to the display despite the password protection. The rest of the functions are unavailable: radio tuner, Bluetooth, CarPlay, Android Auto, USB, HDMI — everything is locked.

Do you recognise this screen? Do not try any more codes — each attempt may make things worse. If the radio already shows a padlock, the only solution is service.

Why does the Zenec Z-N528 lock itself?

The radio locks itself after three attempts to enter the alphanumeric password have been used up. The lock is permanent — it does not disappear after disconnecting the power, and it does not reset over time. The most common scenario: a motorhome owner disconnects the battery for winter.

Disconnecting the battery in a campervan

This is the most common cause. The campervan owner disconnects the battery for the winter season. In spring, once the power is reconnected, the radio asks for a password. The problem is that the password was set by the dealer or the previous owner — and the default “12345” has been changed.

“After removing the battery terminals, the radio asks for a PIN code” — that’s how one customer describes the situation.

Three attempts from memory — 0000, 1234, 12345 — and the display shows the lock symbol.

Buying a used car or campervan

You buy a car from a dealer or a campervan from abroad. The previous owner did not pass on the radio password. The seller says the “code is on the casing” — but the Zenec Z-N528 has no code on the casing or on the label. We describe a similar scenario with a locked Fiat Ducato radio — a popular campervan base.

“I bought a car from abroad, and after disconnecting the battery the radio asks for a code I unfortunately don’t know” — a typical enquiry.

Forgotten personal password

You changed the default “12345” to your own password a year ago. After 12 months you no longer remember the combination of letters and numbers. The problem is especially relevant to alphanumeric passwords — harder to remember than a 4-digit PIN. Forgotten passwords also affect other brands — for example forgotten password in a Pioneer navigation system.

The default “12345” does not work

The user manual gives the default password “12345”. But if anyone — the dealer, the previous owner, you yourself — changed it to something else, the default no longer applies. Each attempt with “12345” uses up one of the three chances.

Myth: “the code is on the radio casing”

“The seller suggested the code might be on the casing. However, there was no code there.”

This model has no password printed on the casing — neither on the label nor in the set documentation. The password is stored only in the device memory.

The manufacturer itself confirms it: unlocking requires sending the unit to a service centre. OEMatic performs the same service in Poland — without international shipping, with a warranty of correctness and unlocking.

Regardless of the cause of the lockout — OEMatic reads the password from the device memory and permanently disables the Password function.

What does the manufacturer say about a locked password?

The user manual (RevE, Q2-2023) includes a CAUTION warning about password protection. The manufacturer states clearly: a lost password requires service. Unlocking is not free of charge.

Quote from the user manual (page 67)

⚠️ CAUTION: “If you protect your ZENEC system with a Passwort make sure, you have access to this password anytime. Lost or forgotten Passwords require the device to be uninstalled and sent in to ZENEC Service Centre. Device unlocking is not free of charge.”

What follows from this warning

  1. The manufacturer does not offer remote unlocking — the radio must be removed and sent in
  2. The service is paid — “not free of charge”, but with no price list
  3. The manufacturer’s workshop is ACR AG in Bad Zurzach, Switzerland — international shipping, a language barrier, weeks of waiting

What the manual does not say

The manual is silent on several important points:

  • How many attempts until lockout? It does not say. From experience, we know: 3 incorrect entries.
  • How much does unlocking in Switzerland cost? No price list.
  • How long does the process take? No information on turnaround time.
  • Is the lock permanent? It does not specify. It is permanent — there is no timer.

The owner of a locked radio faces a choice: sending it to Switzerland (unknown cost, unknown time) or car radio and navigation unlocking service at OEMatic — in less time than the international shipping alone, for a fraction of the cost of a new unit, with a warranty of unlocking.

How we unlock the Zenec Z-N528 — step by step

You send the removed radio, OEMatic resets the attempt counter, reads the original PIN and disables the Password function. The radio comes back ready for installation — without a password, with full functionality. The whole process takes 1-2 working days.

1. Sending the radio to OEMatic

You remove the radio from the vehicle dashboard. The Zenec Z-N528 set includes DIN removal keys — they make removal easier without damaging the dashboard. Pack the radio in a box with protective filling — see how to pack equipment correctly for shipping. Send it by courier to the OEMatic address in Sochaczew.

Tip: include a short description of the problem — e.g. “Zenec Z-N528, password lock, padlock on the screen”.

2. Unlocking (1-2 working days)

Once we receive the parcel, we connect the radio to a 12V power supply. In this case, no specialist test bench is needed — a laboratory power supply is enough.

The process includes three operations:

  • Resetting the incorrect attempt counter — the radio stops displaying the lock screen
  • PIN readout
  • Password function disabled — Password Function → OFF

It’s a complete solution. You do not have to choose between “code readout” and “password disable” — we do everything at once.

3. Function test

Z-N528 main menu with full access to all functions after unlocking

After unlocking, we verify the functions:

  • FM and DAB+ — station reception
  • Bluetooth — phone pairing
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto — USB connection
  • USB — media playback
FM tuner of the Zenec Z-N528 radio at 101.40 MHz — proof of correct operation after unlocking
FM tuner at 101.40 MHz — radio unlocked and fully operational

The radio starts without asking for a password. The padlock screen disappears.

4. Return to the customer

We pack the radio and send it back by insured courier. Return shipping is included in the service price (400 zł incl. VAT). You refit the radio in the vehicle — ready to use.

What do you receive after unlocking?

  • Radio without a password — starts normally, without a lock screen
  • Full functionality: FM/DAB+ tuner, CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, USB, HDMI, cameras, DSP
  • Password function disabled — you can turn it back on in the settings (Setup → Device Setup → Password Function → ON), if you wish.

After unlocking, the radio works like new — without restrictions, without a lock screen, with full access to the settings.

Unlocking vs a new Zenec Z-N528

A new unit costs around 2000 zł. Unlocking (resetting) a locked radio costs 400 zł. You get identical functionality — FM, DAB+, CarPlay, Android Auto — for one fifth of the price.

Why unlock it, instead of buying new?

After unlocking, the radio works exactly like new. All functions return: FM, CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, USB, cameras. You do not lose your equaliser settings, DSP or paired devices — unless you reset them yourself.

The only scenario where a new unit makes sense is physical damage (broken screen, water damage, damaged connectors). A password lock is a software issue, not a hardware one — it does not require replacement.

Which Zenec models do we support?

OEMatic unlocks Zenec models protected by a password — not just the Z-N528. The list includes 8 models with confirmed service, from the ZE-NC, Z-E, Z-N and ZE-MC series.

FAQ — most common questions

No — not remotely. Yes — unlocking for 400 zł is worthwhile with a new one at ~2000 zł. Below are 9 answers to questions asked before sending it in.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions

Can the Zenec Z-N528 be unlocked remotely, without posting it?

No. The password is stored in the unit’s memory — reading it requires a physical connection to the radio. The manufacturer confirms this in the manual: “device to be uninstalled and sent in”. No software or app will unlock the Z-N528 remotely.

Do I have to remove the radio from the car myself?

Yes. The radio must be removed from the dashboard and sent by courier. The Zenec Z-N528 kit includes DIN removal keys — insert them into the slots on the sides of the radio and pull the unit out. Removal instructions are in the manual (section “Removal Work and Preparation”). If you do not feel confident, any auto electrician will remove the radio in 10 minutes. Then complete the shipping form.

Does the default password “12345″ always work?

Only if nobody has changed it before. The manual gives “12345″ as the standard password (Standard password “12345″). If the previous owner, dealer or you have set a different password, “12345″ will not work and will use one of the three attempts.

How many attempts do I have before the radio locks permanently?

Three incorrect attempts. After the third, a padlock icon appears on the screen and the radio enters permanent lock mode. The manual does not state this number outright — we know it from many years of service experience.

Is the lock permanent, or will it unlock after some time?

Permanent. The lock in the Zenec Z-N528 has no timer. Disconnecting the power, removing the backup battery, waiting — nothing will help. The only solution is a service readout and reset.

Does a factory reset or hard reset unlock the Zenec Z-N528?

No. The Zenec Z-N528 does not have a factory reset option available to the user after a password lock has occurred. The factory reset option (if available in the menu) first requires the device to be unlocked. A hard reset by disconnecting the power or removing the backup battery does not reset the attempt counter or the password lock.

Is the PIN code printed on the radio casing?

No. The Zenec Z-N528 has no code on the casing, label or in the documents supplied with the set. The password is stored only in the device memory. The seller’s suggestion that “the code is on the casing” does not apply to this model.

After unlocking, will the radio ask for the password again?

No. We switch off the Password function (Setup → Device Setup → Password Function → OFF). The radio starts normally, without the lock screen. If in future you want to turn the protection back on, you can do so in the settings.

Can I update the firmware or maps after unlocking?

Yes. After unlocking, you have full access to all functions, including updates. Update the firmware via USB — files are available on the manufacturer’s website: zenec.com/support/software-updates/. Update the navigation maps separately: zenec.com/support/karten-updates/.

Is it worth unlocking it, if a new Z-N528 costs ~2000 zł?

400 zł for unlocking vs ~2000 zł for a new unit — you save 80%. After unlocking, the radio works exactly like new. The only reason to buy a new one is physical damage (broken screen, water damage). Password protection is a software issue, not a hardware one. “Is the repair even worth it?” — customers ask. Yes, absolutely.

Is sending the radio by courier safe?

Yes. You send the radio by insured courier (enter the declared value on the label). We also send it back by insured courier — the cost is included in the service price.

Zenec Z-N528 unlock code — can you generate a Zenec Z-N528 password from the serial number?

No. The password in the Z-N528 is any alphanumeric string set by the owner — it is not derived from the serial number or any hardware identifier. No online generator will recover a password it does not know.
