Repair of the radio, navigation and amplifier in Mercedes-Benz C-Class W203 concerns, among other things, the Comand NTG2 (Harman Becker) unit, fitted in this model after 2004. We check it after removal from the car.

Crackling, sound dropouts, silence

With NTG2, the sound can cut out, crackling or “popping” can be heard in the speakers, even with the radio muted, and sometimes the sound disappears from all speakers. The source depends on the car’s equipment: in versions with a separate external amplifier, the fault may lie there, while in the standard version it may be in the main unit. That is why before removal we determine which component should be sent.

Buttons and knobs do not respond

This is a misleading symptom. A lack of response from the panel buttons or the volume knob does not necessarily mean a fault with the radio itself – it may be caused by another module connected to the fibre-optic MOST loop, which blocks communication. A cause outside the unit may be indicated when the screen shows the menu, sound plays, steering wheel controls work, and only the panel buttons do not respond.

Other NTG2 faults in the W203

The following may also point to a fault in the unit itself:

  • losing saved stations and sound settings after every start,
  • persistently incorrect time,
  • freezing on the Mercedes-Benz logo or a restart loop.

We provide an initial quote based on the description and a photo of the front of the unit; the exact price is given after the module has been checked. We start the repair after your approval.

Frequently asked questions and answers

Repair of the radio, navigation and amplifiers in Mercedes-Benz C-Class W203: enquiry, module shipment and quote.

In the Mercedes-Benz C-Class W203, you can hear crackling in the speakers – should you send the radio or the amplifier?

That depends on the car’s equipment. In versions with a separate amplifier, the fault may lie there, while in the standard version it may be in the main unit, so we determine this with you before removal.

The radio buttons in the Mercedes-Benz C-Class W203 do not work – should the unit be sent in?

Not right away. If the screen, sound and steering wheel controls work, and only the panel buttons do not respond, the fault may lie in another module on the MOST loop. Describe this in your enquiry.

The radio in the Mercedes-Benz C-Class W203 loses saved stations – what does that mean?

Losing stations, sound settings or showing the wrong time may point to memory damage on the unit’s main board. We confirm this after checking the removed module.

Does the factory radio come to you together with the Mercedes-Benz C-Class W203?

No. We check only the removed module, sent by courier or delivered by prior arrangement. Removal and refitting are carried out by the workshop on site.

What should be included with a radio enquiry for the Mercedes-Benz C-Class W203?

A description of the fault, the car’s year, and a photo of the front of the unit, from which we will confirm the model. Also state whether the car has a separate amplifier, if you know.
