Frequently asked questions and answers

Repair of Mercedes-Benz W204 radio, navigation and amplifiers: enquiry, module shipment and quote.

Where do speaker crackles in the Mercedes-Benz W204 come from after the radio has warmed up?

In the Comand unit with a retractable screen, this symptom is linked to a fault in the audio path electronics, which appears after warming up. We confirm the cause after checking the removed unit.

The radio in the Mercedes-Benz W204 is asking for an unlock code, although it has not been replaced. What does that mean?

In a Harman Becker radio-navigation unit, such a lockout on a radio that nobody has replaced indicates a fault in the unit. Describe this in your enquiry and attach a photo of the message.

How do you tell Comand apart from Harman Becker radio-navigation in the Mercedes-Benz W204?

Comand has a screen that slides out of the dashboard when the ignition is switched on and a PCMCIA card slot on the panel. The Harman Becker radio-navigation unit has no SD card reader, and its rating label is on the right-hand side of the casing.

How do I get a repair quote for a unit from a Mercedes-Benz W204?

Send the car's year, a description of the fault and photos of the front and the sticker with the part number. Based on this, we will provide an initial quote, and we will confirm the exact price after checking the module.

Does the Comand from a Mercedes-Benz W204 have to be delivered with the car?

No, you send the removed unit by courier, and you arrange removal and refitting locally. We start the repair only after you accept the cost.

Repair of the Mercedes-Benz W204 radio, navigation and amplifier at OEMatic covers the factory units of this C-Class: the Audio 50 APS radio-navigation unit made by Harman Becker and the Comand NTG4 (Mitsubishi) and Comand NTG4.5 systems.

How do you identify the unit in your W204?

Comand NTG4 was fitted to the W204 from 2007–2010. You can recognise it by the screen that slides out of the dashboard when the ignition is switched on, and by the PCMCIA card slot under the “ON” knob; the label on the casing reads “Head Unit High ECE Single” or “Changer”. Audio 50 APS has no SD card reader, and its rating sticker with the part number is on the right-hand side of the casing.

Symptoms these units usually arrive with

In Comand NTG4, the problem is loud crackling and pops in the speakers, or complete silence even though the screen and map are working. The fault appears once the radio has warmed up, for example after a few minutes of driving or after restarting a warm car. In Audio 50 APS, signs of a fault can include:

  • repeated resets: the menu appears, the system shuts down and after a moment only the logo is visible again,
  • no response when turning the key or switching it on manually,
  • stopping at the Mercedes-Benz logo after the ignition is switched on,
  • requesting an unlock code (AntiTheft), even though the radio has never been replaced.

In Comand NTG4.5, reports also concern the hard drive, the SD card slot, the drive that does not read or ejects discs, and map updates interrupted during installation.

What should be included with the enquiry?

Describe what happens after the ignition is switched on and whether the fault depends on temperature. Please include a photo of the front panel and the sticker with the part number. We provide an initial quote based on photos and description, and confirm the exact price after checking the removed unit; we do not need the car. We do not repair Android replacements.
